Berlin! Day One & Two

DAY ONE:

We had to get up real early, same as any other time when it was time to pack up and head to another city, to go from Athens to Berlin.

Unfortunately our first day in Berlin was quite a chilly, gloomy, and rainy day. So I did not have my camera out very much. Many of the photos below are from the morning in the airports, and on the plane. But it was still a pretty decent first day. Just tiring from all of the traveling!

I took a little walk in the airport once we found our gate to try to find some coffee and food for us to eat for breakfast. I was able to find us some cappuccinos, but all I could find was this croissant with chocolate filling, which I definitely thought was a bunch of mini ones and it ended up being one huge croissant. I was tired, obviously =P It was funny =)

We actually had three flights that morning, including layovers and all. I thought our flights would never end! It felt like forever. I kept taking medicine and trying to fall asleep. But by the third and last flight I was just incredibly uncomfortable.

At least on one of the flights we got breakfast, which was a complete surprise! It was an omlette with hash browns, orange juice and some bread and jelly =)

Drew spotted our blue duffel bags from the window being loaded onto the plane!

The photo below is from waiting in the last airport. Anxiously awaiting to board the plane!

Sleepy Drew =)

Once we finally got to Berlin we met with everyone at the Brandenburg gate. Drew and my flight got delayed a bit too, so we had to skip dropping our luggage off at the hostel and go straight to meeting anyone. Because no one's phones were really working and we knew if we didn't meet, then there was hardly even a chance of us seeing our professors and classmates the rest of the time! Which that was the whole point of the trip of course, to go as a class, Polish and American students.

But after we met with everyone, we had to part and go drop off our bags. We then again met up with them at the Holocaust memorial. I will show you photos I took of my experience there later, when the weather was nicer of course. Then we took a glance at the Sony center and critiqued it of course. Here are some photos though...

We continued walking around glancing at our surroundings, while listening to our professors give us short descriptions and their own opinions about the city of Berlin.

We also got to see the the Debis Headquarters building by Renzo Piano....

And the National Gallery by Mies van der Rohe...

Got to love the details =)

DAY TWO:
It did not start off well let me tell you.

See it all started during our last night in Athens when by the end of the night on our walk back to our hostel my foot was absolutely killing me. I was limping and it was just no good. Well the next morning it was feeling better, but it still hurt and I was still limping a little. Then we got to Berlin and with all of the running around to the hostel, etc, meeting everyone and trying to catch up, there I was limping again.

Well I woke up the second day to my foot being huge and crazy swollen! I was in an incredible amount of pain and my foot wouldn't fit into any of my shoes! Luckily I had sandals that could buckle and I loosened them as far as they could go and my foot fit! But too bad it was super chilly and rainy so sandals all day was definitely not what I wanted.

Anyways long story short. I wore my sandals and limped all day. I continued to limp until we finally got back to Warsaw and then I was just in a lot of pain still. Unfortunately we had such a busy week when we got back I had no time to go to the doctors. But the good news is that the pain has finally gone away. I never even found out what happened. I don't know if I just pulled a muscle, or sprained something. Who knows, but I am glad I better now!!

But back to Berlin....

We met with everyone and walked around in parks and all over Berlin just mainly looking at housing complexes and learning about them, here are some photos...

(Above: My Professor and her daughter =)!)
Below: Photos of the Scandinavian Embassy. I really like this building!

Below: Bauhaus Archive...

Below: Photo of the Burned Books Memorial. It's quite hard to see from the photo. But basically it is a window looking underground into a room with blank white bookshelves. It's pretty incredible.

I wanted to have photos showing you how crazy the weather was when I was there! Below are two photos literally taken by looking one way, then looking the opposite direction. We were always afraid that it was going to be pouring down rain on us at any second!

Above is the extension of the German Historical Building. Such lovely structural details!

The Altes Museum....

(Drew posing all serious for me =P)

We finished our day of 'touring' around as one large class and broke off for the night. Me, Drew, Sean, and Katie all headed back to our hostel to take a little break. Then we went out and about looking for somewhere cheap to eat. We were just about to settle on a place, when a guy standing near us must have over heard us contemplating where to eat, and he recommended the place across the street. He said its quite good and incredibly large portions for the price. And that is exactly where we ended up going, thanks nice German guy!

It was called Rosenthaler at Rosenthaler Platz and it was very good!!

That basically concludes the first part of my adventure in Berlin.
We were all quite exhausted so we grabbed a few drinks from the store and the four of us had a fun, relaxing night in the hostel.

We got to bed at a somewhat decent time in preparation for getting up to meet everyone in the morning!

(A post about the last two days in Berlin will be coming later tonight, thus I will be all caught up with Spring break, will go on my last travels, then will be home and tell you all about the last few days!)

Have a most wonderful day!
